SoFi and Kraken are connecting bank settlement to crypto liquidity

SoFi Technologies and Payward, Kraken's parent company, announced a partnership on September 3, 2026, that links real-time U.S. dollar settlement, crypto trade execution, and stablecoin distribution.

Payward will join the SoFi Exchange Network, or SEN, and plans to list SoFiUSD on Kraken. SoFi will use Kraken Prime as an additional source of liquidity for crypto trades placed through the SoFi app. The companies also said qualified custody capabilities may be added as the relationship develops.

The announcement joins three functions that are often handled separately: moving bank dollars, finding liquidity for crypto orders, and distributing a dollar stablecoin. It does not mean every part is already live in every market. Users and institutions still need to distinguish the announced partnership from current product availability.

1. The SoFi Exchange Network addresses the banking-hours gap

Crypto markets trade continuously, while many bank payment systems still operate on limited schedules. SoFi describes SEN as a real-time settlement network that allows participating institutions to clear and settle U.S. dollar transactions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Payward's participation is meant to give eligible Kraken institutional clients another path to move dollars and manage liquidity outside traditional banking hours. That can reduce the time a trading firm waits for fiat funding to arrive, but it does not make every transfer instant or unconditional.

Access will depend on account eligibility, banking controls, compliance review, system availability, and the exact service agreement. The announcement does not publish a universal settlement-time guarantee, fee schedule, or country list.

2. Kraken Prime will sit behind some SoFi crypto orders

Kraken's own explanation focuses on smart order routing. Kraken Prime reads prices and available depth across supported venues, then routes an order according to the execution options available through its system.

For SoFi customers, this is intended to happen behind the existing app experience. SoFi remains the customer-facing product, while Kraken Prime becomes an additional execution and liquidity provider.

That distinction matters. A liquidity relationship does not make SoFi and Kraken the same platform, move a customer's account to Kraken, or guarantee the best possible result on every order. Actual execution still depends on market depth, volatility, order size, fees, routing logic, and the terms shown by the customer-facing service.

Kraken said qualified custody capabilities are expected to follow as the relationship expands. That is forward-looking. The September 3 announcement confirms the intended direction, not completed custody migration for every asset or account.

3. The SoFiUSD listing expands distribution, not deposit insurance

Payward also plans to list SoFiUSD on Kraken for retail, professional, and institutional customers. That could give the bank-issued stablecoin access to a broader trading audience and another source of liquidity.

The exact asset identity matters. SoFi's consumer materials use SOFID as the ticker for SoFiUSD and describe it as a payment stablecoin made available through SoFi Bank, N.A. SoFi says it is intended to be redeemable one-to-one for U.S. dollars and supported primarily by cash reserves.

SoFi also states that SOFID is not a bank deposit, is not insured by the FDIC or SIPC, is not legal tender, and may lose value. A Kraken listing would not change those product boundaries.

Before transferring the asset, users should verify:

  • the exact ticker and contract or mint address;
  • the network supported by both the sending and receiving platform;
  • whether deposits and withdrawals are currently enabled;
  • any minimum, fee, memo, or destination-tag requirement; and
  • whether the service is available for their account and jurisdiction.

A listing announcement is not proof that deposits, withdrawals, and trading are already active. Those states can also change during maintenance or market stress.

4. The partnership moves fiat, trades, and stablecoins in both directions

The arrangement is not a simple vendor contract. Each company contributes a different part of the operating path.

Payward gains access to SoFi's banking and dollar-settlement infrastructure. Kraken is expected to distribute SoFiUSD. SoFi gains another liquidity source for customer crypto trades through Kraken Prime.

This creates a two-way connection:

  1. institutional dollars can move through SEN to support around-the-clock liquidity management;
  2. crypto orders from SoFi can reach Kraken Prime's execution layer; and
  3. SoFiUSD can reach Kraken customers if the planned listing becomes available.

The design may reduce handoffs between separate banking and crypto providers. It does not remove counterparty, custody, blockchain, liquidity, compliance, or operational risk. Each layer still has its own controls and failure states.

5. What the September 3 announcement does not prove

Both companies describe the partnership as a foundation for broader work across payments, treasury, lending, and digital assets. Those are possible extensions, not current product guarantees.

The releases do not provide a launch date for every feature. They do not say that all Kraken customers can use SEN, that every SoFi crypto order will route through Kraken Prime, or that qualified custody is already active.

They also do not establish how SoFiUSD liquidity will behave during heavy redemptions or volatile markets. Users should rely on the live product interface, official asset records, current disclosures, and transaction-specific terms before acting.

The practical test will be whether the connection delivers reliable funding, clear execution disclosures, and predictable deposits and withdrawals outside banking hours. Partnership language alone cannot establish that operating record.

6. This is different from SoFiUSD's May consumer launch

KrptoPay covered SoFiUSD on May 28, 2026, after SoFi made the stablecoin available inside its consumer banking app. That story centered on app access, redemption, risk disclosure, and the difference between a stablecoin and an insured deposit.

The September development is a separate infrastructure story. It connects SoFi's bank settlement network to Payward, adds Kraken Prime to SoFi's execution stack, and proposes a Kraken listing for SoFiUSD.

The distinction is useful because a token can be available in an app without having broad exchange distribution or continuous institutional fiat settlement. This partnership is designed to address those surrounding rails.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What did SoFi and Payward announce?

A: Payward will join the SoFi Exchange Network and plans to list SoFiUSD on Kraken. SoFi will use Kraken Prime as an additional crypto liquidity and execution source, with qualified custody capabilities potentially following later.

Q: Does this mean Kraken customers can already use 24/7 dollar settlement?

A: The companies announced the connection, but access depends on the live rollout, institutional eligibility, account terms, and service availability. Retail customers should not assume SEN access from the announcement alone.

Q: Is SoFiUSD insured like a bank deposit?

A: No. SoFi says SOFID is not a deposit and is not insured by the FDIC or SIPC. It is a payment stablecoin intended to be redeemable one-to-one for U.S. dollars.

Q: Is SoFiUSD already trading on Kraken?

A: The September 3 release says Payward will list SoFiUSD on Kraken. Users should confirm the current listing, network, deposit, and withdrawal status inside Kraken before transferring funds.

Q: Will Kraken hold every SoFi customer's crypto?

A: The companies said qualified custody capabilities may follow as the relationship expands. The announcement does not establish that Kraken custody is already used for every SoFi customer or asset.
